Women's Bible Study - Lent 2012 - Tuesday, February 28, 2012

Women's Bible Study - Lent 2012

Tuesdays, January 24 - February 28

10:00 - 11:30 a.m.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Ivy, Parish Hall

The Classic Spiritual Disciplines of Lent: How can we observe Lent most fruitfully?

Why do we do this at all?

There are great riches to be found in practices such as fasting, almsgiving, and penitence as preparations for the joy of Easter.

Join the Rev. Connie Clark as we study the Biblical bases for these practices as well as passages from Christian writers over the course of the millennia, and we'll come up with contemporary ways to practice these disciplines to enrich our own spiritual lives.

Welcome to all women who desire learning opportunities, time for prayer and fellowship. Bring a Bible, a friend, and enjoy leadership from the dynamic Rev. Connie. Childcare is available by advance request (drop-in childcare NOT available). For more information, contact Audi Barlow (St. Paul's, Ivy) by emailing spivybarlow@aol.com

Lenten Series - Wednesday, March 07, 2012

If you are looking for a way to strengthen your prayer life and draw closer to God, especially as a new discipline during Lent, we would like to offer Benedictine spirituality as a tried-and-true approach. Benedict of Nursia wrote his rule for monastic life around 540 A.D., and this gentle and simple rule became the foundation not only for Benedictine monasteries, but for many other monastic orders as well. “In the course of subsequent centuries, Western monastics came to regard the Benedictine Rule as a wise and compassionate synthesis of all that was best and admirable… Benedictine monasteries were often the last repository of culture for the long centuries between the Classical Age and the Renaissance. For this, Western society owes to Benedictinism an inestimable debt” (from The Story of Christian Spirituality, the Fortress Press).

Why should we Episcopalians find this ancient rule helpful for our own spiritual journey? How can a rule for living in community apply to us? As Benedictine nun and prolific writer Sr. Joan Chittister has said, “The 21st century is indeed a Benedictine century. People need stability in relationships, creation rather than destruction in the works they do, and a Christian attitude toward life and balance to match the frenetic pace of their personal lives, family lives, and national lives. Benedictine spirituality offers all of that and more.” We are all part of more than one community, at work, at home, in social settings, and in church. Benedictine spirituality offers a guideline for living prayerfully wherever we are, with mindfulness of God’s presence and loving concern for one another.

For Episcopalians, it is also worth noting that our Book of Common Prayer, as originally conceived and set forth by Thomas Cranmer, owes a significant debt to the Benedictine rule.

On Wednesday, March 7; Thursday, March 15; Wednesday, March 21; and Wednesday, March 28, we will share information about Benedictine spirituality and guided prayers. The evenings will begin with Evening Prayer in the sanctuary at 6:00, followed by a simple meal of soup, bread, and water in Deese Hall, with the Benedictine discussion to begin at 7:00. (If you cannot arrive until 7:00, that would be fine). In keeping with the simplicity of the rule, we ask that you bring your own bowl and spoon for the dinner.

See Susan and David Bagby, Donna Lydon, Wendy Steeves, or Connie if you have questions.

Accepting Grace Group - Monday, April 09, 2012

The Accepting Grace Group will meet every Monday evening, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Deese Hall. We will use the book "You Can Help With Your Healing" as the focal point for what is hoped to be a wide-ranging discussion. By a Lutheran pastor named Vernon Bittner, the book offers a Christian interpretation of the highly effective 12 Steps, familiar to so many in AA, Al-Anon, OA, and other 12 Step groups.

Here is a brief description of the back of the book: "In this revised edition of this book, Vernon Bittner invites us to discover how to live with wholeness of body, mind, and spirit. To assist all who are searching for a more fulfilling life, he has reinterpreted the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous in the light of the Christian faith and applied them to daily living."

Accepting Grace Group - Monday, July 16, 2012

Please contact Susan Hull Bagby with any questions. The cost of the book from Amazon, including study guide, is $18.00. Susan can order for you or you may want to order one for yourself. Let her know which you prefer. You can reach Susan at either sahhull@embarqmail.com or 978-1627.

Accepting Grace Group - Monday, October 22, 2012

Please contact Susan Hull Bagby with any questions. The cost of the book from Amazon, including study guide, is $18.00. Susan can order for you or you may want to order one for yourself. Let her know which you prefer. You can reach Susan at either sahhull@embarqmail.com or 978-1627.

Please contact Susan Hull Bagby with any questions. The cost of the book from Amazon, including study guide, is $18.00. Susan can order for you or you may want to order one for yourself. Let her know which you prefer. You can reach Susan at either sahhull@embarqmail.com or 978-1627.
